This release turns Cap Desktop into a stronger recorder for both humans and agents. The desktop app now ships with the Cap CLI, adds a dedicated CLI settings page, and gives automated workflows a reliable way to record, export, inspect, upload, update, and diagnose Cap from the command line.

It also brings a new split-screen editing mode, self-hosted server routing, tighter recording defaults, more resilient fragmented and segmented upload recovery, and another round of export, audio timing, auth, and macOS stability fixes.

  • Bundled Cap CLI — Cap Desktop now bundles the cap command-line tool and can install or repair it from Settings -> CLI. The installer detects existing Cap-managed shims, repoints stale links, handles symlinked targets, and recognizes persisted Windows PATH entries.

  • Segment manifest hardening — Finalization now treats segment manifest failures as retryable mux failures and can auto-complete the manifest before muxing.
  • Audio timing repair — Studio recordings now persist audio gap summaries and startup overlap trim, repair stale drift during editor startup, support negative timing offsets, and avoid playback readiness hangs when audio stops or timelines are invalid.
  • Safer exports — Export now synthesizes a default timeline for unedited recordings, tracks progress more reliably, and guards against zero-frame output so simple recordings can still export cleanly.
  • Silent-audio export fallback — Exports now emit silent audio frames when the renderer returns no audio, avoiding empty-audio edge cases.
  • Manual titles are preserved — Desktop uploads now keep track of manually provided recording names, so AI title generation can avoid replacing titles you already chose.
  • Desktop organization fixes — Desktop APIs now merge owned and member organizations consistently, so the app can create videos and show organizations correctly for members as well as owners.
  • Authentication reliability — macOS Tahoe deep-link delivery no longer wipes auth state, and self-hosted sign-in continues even when organization or plan refreshes fail.

This release gives Cap Desktop a new and improved foundation for the work you do every day: recording, screenshots, importing, editing, exporting, uploading, and recovering when something goes wrong. We have hardened the capture and export pipelines, improved camera and microphone handling, and made the editor smoother so future desktop features can build on a more reliable core.

On top of that foundation, this release adds new features: Google Drive storage, merging Studio Mode recordings, importing existing videos and screenshots, screenshot OCR, camera background blur, organization branding, and more.

  • Google Drive Integration — Connect Google Drive as a storage option in Settings -> Integrations. New Instant Mode recordings, or Studio Mode recordings created as a shareable link, will use your connected Google Drive for both uploading and serving the video.
  • Merge previous recordings — Bring existing Studio Mode recordings into the Cap editor and merge them into your current project. You can also import local videos into the editor, add media from the tray, main window, recordings settings, or drag and drop, with progress shown while Cap converts files into editable projects.
  • Camera background blur — Camera recordings now support background blur in both the live preview and the final export. Choose blur strength from the camera controls or editor sidebar, with GPU/Core ML/DirectML acceleration where available and a CPU fallback when needed.
  • Import screenshots into the editor — Bring local screenshots and images into the screenshot editor so you can crop, annotate, style, copy, or export them with the same tools as fresh captures.
  • Native screenshot OCR — The screenshot editor can now recognize text from screenshots on macOS and Windows. Select an area, copy text from the selectable overlay, and keep the original screenshot layout intact while you work.
  • Organization branding in the editor — Pick an organization in the editor, use its brand colors in backgrounds, gradients, captions, keyboard overlays, and exports, and manage brand colors and logos from the new organization dropdown.
  • Compatibility recording quality — Studio mode now has Compatibility, Balanced, and Ultra profiles. Compatibility lowers bitrate and capture pressure for older or lower-power machines, while Instant mode quality controls now make upload resolution easier to choose.
  • More resilient recording recovery — Recording now preflights disk space, tracks health during capture, hardens fragmented recording recovery, and can rescue more sessions after a crash or forced quit.
  • Smoother camera and microphone handling — Cap restores saved camera and microphone selections more reliably, locks the selected microphone during recording start, recovers mic preview after recording, handles camera setup timeouts without blocking the recorder, and now detects microphones whose drivers misreport their sample rate so audio no longer comes out choppy or gappy.
  • Audio and video stay in sync — Studio Mode recordings now keep audio locked to video for the full length of a recording, including long sessions. Cap reconciles late or overlapping microphone audio against the capture clock instead of layering in duplicate silence, bounds unexpected gaps against wall-clock time, pads the tail with silence when a capture pipeline is cancelled, and handles Windows system audio, microphone resampling, decoded sources, and surround downmixing more reliably.
  • Better camera preview reliability — Camera windows are session-scoped, preview failures show structured messages in the UI, frame stalls trigger recovery, WebSocket reconnects use stronger backoff, and sleep/wake cleanup is more reliable.
  • Faster camera preview performance — Camera preview rendering is coalesced, native preview threads are prioritized, legacy preview frames are throttled, and Cap prefers lower-cost camera capture formats when they keep recording smooth.
  • Clearer, safer exports — Export now uses the native save dialog, shows a redesigned circular progress overlay, handles cancellation cleanly, prompts before closing a window with an active export, serializes preview generation, guards active exports before quit, and recovers from more rendering failures instead of leaving the app stuck.
  • Windows export and playback stability — Windows exports use safer release paths, pin the graphics adapter used by desktop rendering, and avoid text scaling issues that could make the main window and controls render at the wrong size.
  • Smoother editor playback — The editor now preloads cursor assets, prerenders the first frame, uses a faster RGBA/WebGPU path, improves NV12 conversion, and keeps audio playback aligned with the visible playhead.
  • Better cursor, zoom, and composite rendering — Auto zooms ease out more naturally, zoom focus follows the smoothed cursor path, cursor size defaults are more predictable, cursor height now respects the source screen and crop, and composited frames have smoother antialiasing, blending, and motion blur defaults.
  • Desktop backgrounds and background controls — The editor includes a bundled city wallpaper pack, supports manual image imports, can use your current desktop wallpaper as a background, snapshots the desktop background for Studio recordings, and adds a screen background blur control for more polished exports.
  • Settings redesign — Desktop settings have a shared layout, a refreshed recordings and integrations experience, an account profile in the sidebar, native macOS material styling, a manual Check for Updates action, and a telemetry opt-out toggle.
  • More polished recorder controls — The main recorder has refreshed device controls, camera and microphone format pickers, animated navigation into device settings, better saved input restoration, clearer warnings when Compatibility mode may reduce capture settings, and more reliable click handling for the in-progress recording controls.
  • Cap windows stay out of recordings — macOS recordings now exclude more Cap-owned windows by default, including Tauri webviews and overlays. Cap also warns when a window cannot be protected and hides overlays before screenshots.
  • macOS focus and Dock fixes — Fixed duplicate Dock icons, app switcher persistence, panel focus behavior, and the hide Dock icon setting when Cap panels or recording windows are visible.
  • Timeline and editing fixes — Captions and keyboard tracks now clamp correctly at trim boundaries, split-mode clicks land more accurately on clamped segments, Studio recordings allow deleting the last clip in a segment, and crop menu positioning is more reliable.

Transcript Editor, Optimized Exports, ProRes Cursor Export & Bug Fixes

  • Transcript editor — Captions are now editable at the word level in a dedicated transcript panel. Click, Ctrl+click, or Shift+click to select words, navigate with the keyboard, and delete words with automatic ripple-delete across all timeline tracks. Active words highlight in sync with playback position.
  • Optimize file size toggle — A new toggle on the export page enables CRF-based encoding for smaller output files. File size for 4K recordings is reduced by up to 97%. This is a slower export method, but results in significantly smaller file sizes. MP4s are now written with the faststart flag so playback begins before the full file downloads.
  • Cursor-only ProRes export — Export just the cursor as a transparent ProRes 4444 MOV file. The display stream is skipped entirely during render so cursor-only exports stay fast regardless of recording resolution.
  • Faster, more accurate transcriptions — A new on-device transcription engine powered by Parakeet TDT runs alongside Whisper. The best available model is selected automatically, with Parakeet disabled on Intel Macs where it isn't supported. Model files download to a staging directory and swap in atomically, and the global model cache is released when the editor closes.
  • Stop recording overlay — A full-window stop button now appears on the main window while a recording is active, making it easier to end a session without hunting for the controls.
  • Faster crop dialog — Opening the crop dialog now shows an instant canvas-frame snapshot while the accurate backend frame loads in the background. If the accurate frame fails, the editor falls back gracefully to a screenshot. Timeline computation is memoized with Set-based selection lookups, sorted segment caches, and precomputed clip durations to cut overhead on long recordings.
  • Smoother cursor and zoom — New Smooth and Fast cursor animation presets join the existing options. The cursor spring simulation no longer clamps at screen edges, producing more natural motion. Zoom focus tracking uses a gentler viewport pan that keeps the cursor visible within a small margin instead of abruptly shifting.
  • Better playback prefetch — Cursor timelines and zoom interpolators are now built once outside the frame loop instead of per-frame. Buffer-gap handling no longer resets the prefetch pipeline, and frame fallback uses a unified backward-preferred lookup with a wider search window.
  • Streamlined macOS permissions — Permission requests, verification, and open-settings flows are centralized in a shared utility used by both onboarding and the main window. On Windows and Linux the permissions step is skipped entirely.
  • More reliable recording — The macOS MP4 encoder now exits cleanly when the frame queue finishes, frames submitted after finish are rejected with proper session state tracking, and the audio finish wait is extended to avoid truncated recordings in instant mode.
  • Camera and export fixes — The camera preview re-opens correctly when the same device is already active. Windows camera exports no longer show snow or artifacts thanks to proper buffer stride handling. 4K 60fps software exports no longer fail from timestamp ordering issues, with B-frames disabled in the high-throughput path and a pts/dts safety clamp before muxing.
  • Screenshot shortcut fix — The screenshot area picker shortcut no longer silently fails when recording settings are missing fields from a previous version.

  • Caption tracks in the timeline — Captions now appear as editable segments directly in the editor timeline. You can drag, trim, split, and rearrange them alongside your other tracks. Per-segment styling overrides, text tools, and presets are available in the sidebar so you can fix transcripts and fine-tune appearance without leaving the editor.
  • Keyboard press overlay — Key presses are captured during recording and shown as their own timeline track. Each segment can be edited just like captions—adjust timing, text, and styling—so keyboard shortcuts and typing stay readable in the final export.
  • New onboarding flow — The first-run experience now walks you through permissions and setup with clearer steps and better copy. Help is easier to find from the main window, including a macOS title bar shortcut, so learning the difference between Studio and Instant Mode takes seconds.
  • Faster exports — Reworked the export pipeline with cursor precomputation, encoder tuning, and better decode-render overlap. The unnecessary pre-export delay was removed, and size and time estimates are now calibrated from real-world data. GPU-accelerated NV12 encoding is used when available with an automatic CPU fallback.
  • Smoother editor playback — Improved frame cache lookups, adaptive readahead, and resolution-aware prefetch so scrubbing and playback stay responsive on longer recordings. Per-frame overhead was reduced across the board.
  • Better Windows playback — MediaFoundation decoding now uses batching and zero-copy frame handling with FFmpeg fallback when hardware decode isn't available. WebGPU prefers DirectX 12 on Windows for lower-latency rendering.
  • More reliable recording — macOS capture tracks pending timestamps and stops cleanly when the muxer can't accept more samples. Corrupt MP4s are repaired more often during upload, the camera window always hides when recording ends, and closing the app or switching devices no longer leaves stray processes behind.
  • Tighter audio–video sync — Audio drift ahead of video is now limited, timestamp offsets are deferred until video is ready, and system audio start times stay aligned with the rest of the mix.
  • Crop and padding fixes — Padding and backgrounds now respect the active crop region, so the exported frame matches what you see in the editor.

  • Recording resilience and health monitoring — Cap now monitors the entire recording pipeline for issues in real time. If your camera disconnects, microphone drops out, or audio gaps are detected, the recording continues gracefully with automatic silence insertion and reconnection. A degraded state indicator lets you know when something needs attention without interrupting your flow.
  • Screenshot hotkeys — Added configurable keyboard shortcuts for capturing your entire display, a specific window, or a selected area. These can be customized in the hotkeys section of Settings.
  • Smarter screenshot editor — Window captures now use RGBA with rounded corners for a more polished look. Increasing padding or corner rounding automatically enables the background fill so your screenshot looks great without extra clicks.   • More reliable uploads — Failed upload chunks are now automatically retried with network recovery logic. Chunk sizes were reduced and concurrency increased for faster, more resilient uploads to S3.
  • Improved audio handling — Added runtime resampling and silence generation for microphones, higher buffer timeouts for wireless audio sources, and graceful handling of high channel count devices (e.g., 34-channel audio interfaces). Windows now falls back to a default audio config when no output device is available.
  • Instant mode optimizations — Instant mode recordings now use a lower bitrate and shorter keyframe interval for smaller files and faster uploads. Encoder channel pressure is tracked to prevent frame drops, and disk space is checked before recording starts.
  • Better macOS window management — Windows are now backed by NSPanel for proper state management, with position persistence across sessions for both the main and camera windows. The prewarmed overlays system was replaced with a cleaner panel-based approach.
  • Camera recovery and lifecycle — Recordings continue even if the camera disconnects mid-capture, with automatic reconnection when the device becomes available again. Camera preview pause/resume and a large camera preset for camera-only mode were also added.
  • Windows recording improvements — Added frame scaling to handle resolution changes mid-recording, improved system audio resiliency, and replaced panicking code paths with proper error propagation throughout the Windows capture and encoding pipeline.
