Features

• Native app preview - The new app is built with GPUI for a faster, more responsive recording and editing experience with a native feel. Enable Cap GPUI in Settings → Experimental to try it. It shares your recordings and settings with the existing app, and you can switch back from its Experimental settings. This is an optional preview with some features still missing.
• 3D camera moves - Give screen recordings depth with a new 3D camera track. Choose ready-made scenes and motion presets or build your own shots with start and end positions, rotation, perspective, easing, and focus blur, then combine multiple shots on the timeline.
• Color correction - Adjust the screen and camera separately with presets and controls for exposure, contrast, saturation, temperature, tint, fade, vignette, and grain. Control the strength of each look and whether the cursor follows the screen's colors.
• Animated text - Add styled titles and callouts with fonts installed on your computer, text presets, alignment, spacing, shadows, and entrance and exit animations.
• Full-screen title cards - Turn a text segment into a full-screen card between parts of your recording. The recorded video and audio pause while the title is shown, background music continues, and the recording resumes where it left off.
• Animated gradient backgrounds - Choose a gradient preset or build your own with editable colors and positions, then add motion to the background. Save favorites or randomize a gradient for a different look.
• Cursor styles - Choose macOS, macOS Tahoe, Windows, or a simple circle. Replacement cursors follow pointer shape changes, including text selection, links, and resizing.
• Click ripples - Make clicks easier to follow with animated ripples. Adjust their color, size, duration, and strength, including when the cursor is frozen in place.
• Draw on screenshots - Use the new Draw tool, or press D, to circle, underline, and sketch freehand. Change stroke color, width, and opacity, keep drawing multiple strokes, and move or resize them afterward. Drawings are included when you copy, save, or share the image.
• Faster timeline editing - Drag the time ruler to scrub, use the minimap to navigate long recordings, and snap cuts to the playhead or other segment boundaries. Select all segments on the current track with Cmd/Ctrl+A, edit multiple zoom segments together, and change clip speed and audio behavior directly from the timeline.
• Frames in the native editor - Add a macOS, Windows, browser, or MacBook frame from the native editor, with light and dark appearances and editable browser URLs or macOS window titles.
• Default zoom amount - Choose your preferred zoom strength in General settings for newly added zoom segments and automatically generated zooms.
• Product demos with agents - The agent installer now includes a companion cap-demo skill that helps an agent turn a website into a recorded product demo with 3D shots, a matching background, cursor movement, and music. This workflow currently supports macOS on Apple Silicon and has additional setup requirements.
• Diagnostic reports - Run Studio and Instant Mode audio/video sync tests from Settings → Feedback, with an optional microphone check. Inspect the saved report, including device details and recent recording diagnostics, before choosing to send it to Cap.
• Local-currency upgrade prices - The classic desktop app's upgrade screen now displays Cap Pro and commercial-license prices in pounds, euros, or dollars based on your location.

Fixes

• Disconnected microphones and cameras - Cap remembers a selected device when it is unplugged, shows that it is not connected, and selects it again when it returns. Missing devices no longer trap recording startup in a restore loop, and renamed Bluetooth microphones are matched more reliably.
• More reliable recording recovery - Interrupted recordings can recover complete fragments that were left out of their saved manifest. Incomplete fragments are rejected, fragment paths are resolved correctly, and stopping a recording avoids a shutdown deadlock that could leave saving stuck.
• Safer low-storage recording in the native app - The native app now leaves extra disk space to finish saving a recording, shows low-storage warnings, and makes it clear when saving is still in progress. This helps protect the footage already captured when space runs short.
• Audio starts with the picture - Editor playback waits for audio to start before advancing the video, reducing the delay between what you see and hear at the beginning of playback.
• Muted clips stay muted - Muting a normal-speed clip now carries through playback and export, including across split segments. The native timeline also makes muted clips easier to spot with a muted label and icon.
• Native playback shortcut - The spacebar consistently starts and pauses playback after clicking editor controls, while text fields still accept spaces normally.
• Text, captions, and zooms stay aligned - Captions, transcript seeking, and overlay tracks now account for pauses introduced by full-screen titles. Deleting a section keeps those tracks aligned, and zoom target previews use the correct point in the recording after cuts, speed changes, and title cards.
• Cleaner background blur - Fixed visible grid and comb-like artifacts in blurred backgrounds.
• Static recordings finish correctly - Recordings with little or no screen movement now retain the full duration up to when you stop. Instant Mode in the native app and on Linux uploads recording segments as they become available.
• Native Windows export previews - Fixed black previews when preparing an export in the native Windows app.
• macOS recording startup - Improved screen and window discovery, capture startup, camera-device handling, and permission refreshes, including returning from system permission settings.
• Native app crash recovery - Fixed macOS crashes involving window visibility and graphics surfaces. After an unexpected native app exit, the next launch returns to the classic app.
• Safer updates and app switching - Updating, restarting, or switching between the native and classic apps now checks for active recordings, exports, and other work before proceeding. Single-instance handling and app handoffs are more reliable.
• Native Windows window behavior - Improved display scaling, window controls, snapping, taskbar and tray behavior, and restoring the native app after it has been hidden.
• Windows camera compatibility - Improved support for capture cards and virtual cameras that need a fallback capture method. A camera that fails to initialize no longer hides the remaining devices in the picker.
• Windows window screenshots - Added a fallback capture method for window screenshots when the usual capture API fails.
• Linux recording and audio - Improved Wayland capture selection and X11 window recording, including following resized windows without capturing overlapping apps. CLI recordings gain camera compositing, while PipeWire system audio and microphone capture stay separate and use more compatible buffering.
• Linux screenshot privacy - Wayland screenshots respect the selected target and avoid falling back to a capture that could include other windows. Screenshot and automation notifications are delivered more reliably.
• Linux installation and updates - Added packaging support for DEB, RPM, AppImage, and Arch, with automatic updates for DEB and AppImage and package-manager guidance for RPM and Arch. AppImage CLI launchers also preserve your working directory and relative paths.
• Native account and app integration - Improved account, profile, settings, and tray synchronization, along with clipboard actions, sign-in links, and opening Cap from other apps.
• Safer support logs - Uploaded logs remove sensitive credentials from URLs, and caption text is kept out of normal release logs.

Performance

• Faster Windows editor startup - The editor uses Microsoft's newer shader compiler to reduce the long graphics setup delay that affected some Windows GPUs.
• Lower Windows background usage - Camera discovery no longer repeatedly opens capture devices and leaks their resources. Device polling also pauses while the app is hidden in the tray.
• Smoother playback and scrubbing - The editor limits audio and video caches, cancels outdated frame requests, and keeps timeline work responsive during playback and rapid seeking, particularly in larger projects.
• Lighter recording and exports on macOS - More of the capture, preview, and export pipeline reuses graphics surfaces directly, reducing repeated frame copies and temporary allocations.
• Faster media imports - The classic and native editors reuse decoded frames when building imported clips and previews.
• More efficient camera blur - Camera background effects reuse processing buffers and graphics resources to reduce repeated work.
• Hardware encoding on supported Linux systems - Cap can use NVIDIA encoding when the local encoder passes its compatibility check, with a software fallback when it is unavailable.

Sharing

• Uploads recover more reliably - Upload retries reuse the recording's reserved share link, and processing waits and retries when the server is busy. Stalled jobs have broader recovery coverage, and bulk imports leave capacity available for regular recordings.
• Better playback on phones - Fixed encoding timing that could stop shared videos from playing on mobile after an online edit.
• Recordings without speech - Cloud transcription recognizes recordings with no spoken audio and skips them instead of repeatedly reporting a transcription failure.
• More reliable AI results - Titles, summaries, chapters, and transcript translations can retry with another configured AI provider when a request fails or returns unusable results.
• Custom-domain link previews - Shared recordings on verified custom domains now show the correct preview images in Slack and other apps that display link previews.
• Monthly sharing allowance - Accounts without Cap Pro now have an allowance of 25 video share links per calendar month. Local recordings, screenshots, and videos created before August 19 are unaffected. Each new month gives you a fresh allowance; links created over a previous month's limit stay locked unless you upgrade or delete earlier videos from that month to free up the allowance.

Features

• MacBook notch overlay in Studio Mode - Screen capture records straight through the physical notch, so recordings of a notched MacBook show an unbroken menu bar where you saw a cutout. Studio Mode can now draw the notch back over the recording, in both the editor preview and exports, and it follows your crop, padding, and zoom automatically. New recordings capture the exact notch geometry at record time; for older recordings you can position the overlay by hand.

Fixes

• Recordings no longer stop mid-way with a writer error on macOS - When screen or microphone capture briefly stalled and then recovered in a burst, two frames could land on the same timestamp and the video writer would fail a few seconds later, ending the recording with an error. Frame timing is now corrected before it reaches the writer, so the recording continues. This affected instant, studio, and camera recordings, and was most likely with USB microphones whose capture clock can stall.
• The same timing issue fixed for instant recordings on Windows - Frames arriving in a burst could collide on a single timestamp tick and be rejected by the recorder. Timestamps are now kept strictly increasing, and a stuck capture clock is surfaced in logs instead of failing silently.
• Pause and resume reliability on macOS - Pausing a recording could occasionally produce overlapping frame timings that made the writer fail sporadically after resume. Recordings now survive repeated pause and resume cycles, including stopping while paused.
• Disk-space protection for every recording mode - Previously only instant recordings checked disk space. Every mode, including the camera track, now refuses to start without enough free space, warns when space runs low mid-recording, and stops cleanly before the disk fills so your recording is finalized and playable instead of corrupted.
• Camera recordings survive encoder errors - If the camera encoder hits an error mid-recording, the camera file is now finalized up to that point instead of being left unreadable.
• Fixed a freeze during the macOS screen-recording permission check - A deadlock in the permission check could hang the app when starting a recording.

Features

• API keys for the CLI - Generate API keys from your account settings on the Cap dashboard and set the CAP_API_KEY environment variable to authenticate the Cap CLI without a browser login. This makes it possible to run Cap in CI, on remote servers, and with agents in headless environments. You can list and revoke your keys from the dashboard at any time.
• Confirm before recording without a microphone - Cap now asks for confirmation before starting a recording when no microphone is selected or the selected microphone is unavailable, so you never finish a take only to find it silent. It is on by default and can be turned off in Settings under General.
• Exclude floating panels from recordings on macOS - The excluded-windows picker in Settings now lists floating accessory panels, like quick launchers and utility palettes, so you can keep them out of your recordings too.

Fixes

• Recordings with a damaged mic track open again - A recording whose microphone audio file was empty or unreadable previously refused to open in the editor at all. The editor now opens the recording without the mic audio and logs a warning instead, and exports still validate audio strictly so a track is never silently dropped from a final file.
• Memory growth while idle on macOS - Routine permission checks queried the display list every few seconds and leaked a small amount of memory each time, which could add up to significant usage over long sessions. This is fixed, along with smaller leaks in camera enumeration, display name and scale lookups, microphone device names, and the mic volume meter.
• Recording start feedback - Clicking record from the target picker now shows a loading state immediately instead of appearing to do nothing while the recording starts.
• Window screenshots on Windows - Taking a screenshot of a window no longer fails because the picker window closed itself before the capture was dispatched.
• Editor playback with background music - Playback audio now works when your timeline has music but no recorded audio track.
• Mic volume meter accuracy - The microphone level meter no longer stalls or grows memory when an audio device's capture clock freezes.

Performance

• Lighter instant recordings on macOS - Instant recordings now capture at a size matched to the output resolution instead of the display's full Retina resolution, reducing CPU and memory use on high-density displays.
• Faster camera preview during instant recordings - The camera preview streams frames in a more efficient format while instant recording, lowering preview overhead.

Features

• Live transcript while uploading - Viewers who open a share link mid-upload see the transcript appear live as the recording is spoken, then hand off seamlessly to the final version.
• Instant transcript at load - Landing on a finished Cap shows the transcript immediately instead of a processing spinner.
• Live captions on the player - Captions are available on the share page player as soon as they exist, without restarting playback.
• Transcript tab front and center - Landing on the share page right after stopping a recording opens the Transcript tab automatically.

Commands return machine-readable JSON, changes require your confirmation, and secrets stay out of chat and MCP. Set up Cap for your agent with one copy-paste prompt.
• Built-in teleprompter - Open a dedicated teleprompter from the main window, paste or type your script, and control auto-scroll speed, text size, opacity, cue markers, and mirrored text. Your script and settings are saved between sessions, the window stays above other apps, and Cap keeps it out of recordings on macOS and Windows.
• Clip transitions - Add crossfades or fades through black between clips, then adjust the transition length directly from the timeline. Transitions are included in editor playback and final exports.
• Expandable capture window with Recents - Expand the main window for a roomier capture setup with clearer camera, microphone, and system-audio controls, plus a carousel of recent recordings and screenshots that open in one click. Cap remembers your preferred window size, and macOS 26 uses the native Liquid Glass appearance.
• Reusable area capture - Area recording now includes quick aspect-ratio presets, fill and reset controls, and the option to lock a region for future recordings. The controls stay outside the selected area so they do not cover what you are capturing.
• Blur and pixelate masks - Sensitive-area masks can now use either a smooth blur or pixelation, with adjustable strength for each effect.
• Audio controls for retimed clips - When slowing down or speeding up a clip, choose whether to mute its audio, preserve natural voice pitch, or let the pitch follow the playback speed.

Fixes

• Windows pause and resume reliability - Pausing a recording for more than a few seconds no longer triggers a false hardware-encoder timeout when you resume.
• Camera background blur startup - Packaged desktop builds now locate the bundled background-blur runtime correctly, making camera blur initialize more reliably.
• Existing recording imports on Windows - The clips sidebar can now select Cap recording folders correctly when importing an existing recording.
• Safer macOS window positioning - The main window is kept below the menu bar and display notch so its controls remain reachable.

• Smoother playback and scrubbing - The editor cancels outdated frame work sooner, keeps active decoders ready across seeks, and avoids prefetching frames that are already behind the playhead.

Features

• Mute your mic mid-recording - The mic icon in the recording bar is now a mute toggle during instant recordings, so you can silence your microphone without stopping the recording. System audio keeps recording as normal.
• Nightly update channel - Opt into nightly builds from Settings to get the newest changes early. Nightly updates install automatically in the background and prompt you to restart when ready, and switching back to stable returns you to the latest stable release.
• 24 and 25 FPS capture options - The max capture framerate setting now includes 24 and 25 FPS for film and PAL-friendly workflows.

Fixes

• Recordings no longer stop after a few seconds - Reopening the recording bar for a new instant recording could carry over stale state from a previous session and trip the recording limit almost immediately. The bar now fully resets between recordings.
• Recording start clicks no longer vanish - Clicking record from the target picker could silently do nothing while the windows closed around it. The click is now handled reliably, and if a recording fails to start, the main window reappears with a clear error message.
• Slow-motion recordings repaired - Recordings on high-refresh-rate Windows monitors could come out stretched and out of sync with their audio. New recordings capture at the correct speed, and affected existing recordings are automatically repaired when opened in the editor, keeping the original file as a backup.
• Better mic sync - Microphone timestamps now account for measured input latency, macOS resolves the correct input device when measuring it, and a macOS timestamp conversion bug affecting audio alignment has been fixed.
• Multi-monitor and mixed-DPI fixes - Windows now restore, center, and follow correctly across monitors with different display scaling, overlays size correctly on HiDPI Windows setups, and moving a window between monitors with different scaling no longer breaks its layout.
• Update toast fits the window - The "update installed, restart to apply" toast no longer overflows the main window and clips its text and buttons.
• Integrations page when signed out - The integrations settings page no longer errors when you are not signed in.

• Screenshot sharing - Upload screenshots directly from the screenshot editor or automations. The editor copies the share link after upload, automation rules can copy or open it, and rendered PNG or JPEG uploads preserve your annotations, crop, padding, background, and style settings.
• Desktop automations - Create rules in Settings that run after screenshots, recordings, uploads, imports, and deleted recordings. Automations can copy, save, export, upload, open files, read screenshot text, show notifications, open or skip the editor, apply presets, run commands, send webhooks, and delete local files.
